15 new Turkish Netflix projects of 2021
Kıvanç Tatlituğ, Çağatay Ulusoy, Barış Arduç, Cem Yılmaz and Gökçe Bahadir. Next year the biggest stars of the Turkish screen will work with Netflix in new projects, which were announced at a special online press conference.
The 20th of October, Netflix announced new Turkish films and series to be released in 2021. Turkish viewers were impressed by the amount of work done, but these are not all the projects of the platform that are being prepared right now. There are still plenty of pleasant surprises to come. What series and movies are the platform’s users expecting next year?
The premiere of the film Struggle Alley / Mücadele Çıkmazı starring Çağatay Ulusoy and Emir Ali Doğrul is scheduled for March 15, 2021. Directed by Can Ulkay. This is the story of the extraordinary friendship of Mehmet, a garbage collector in one of the impoverished neighborhoods of Istanbul and young Ali. The boy who lost his parents will find not only a friend, but a new family. Note that the announcement of the release date six months before the premiere means that Netflix makes a special bet on this film.
TV series Story of the submarine / Bir Denizaltı Hikayesi starring Kıvanç Tatlituğ. The director is Tolga Karaçelik. The scriptwriter Jason George, best known for his previous works on the Netflix series The Protector, The Gift, Into the Night. A research expedition on a submarine turns into a rescue operation after a natural disaster strikes Earth. Marine biologist Arman will be forced to save not only himself and his team, but also humanity.
The series 50 square meters / 50 m2 will be released on Netflix on January 27, 2021. The director is Selçuk Aydemir. Starring Engin Öztürk and Aybuke Pusat. A black comedy about the adventures of a criminal who happened to be in a suburb of Istanbul, pretending to be a son of a small atelier owner. He changes the neighborhood, but so does the neighborhood.
The psychological thriller Fatma starring Burcu Biricik is the story of a simple cleaning lady who accidentally kills a man while looking for her missing husband. This event turns her into a serial killer who remains above suspicion.
TV series Midnight at the Pera Palace / Pera Palas’ta Gece Yarısı based on the bestseller by Charles King. The director is Emre Şahin. The story begins nowadays when journalist Esra is commissioned to report on the legendary Pera Palace Hotel in Istanbul. The girl accidentally discovers a secret room that leads her to 1919. Traveling back in time, she finds herself in the very center of a political conspiracy against the founder of the modern Turkish state, Mustafa Kemal Ataturk. Hotel manager Ahmet comes to her aid. Together, they must prevent a catastrophe that could ruin Turkey’s future. However, she meets the handsome and mysterious Halit, the owner of the most prestigious club in Istanbul, and realizes that in this story everything is not at all what it seems and no one is who he claims to be.
TV series The Uysals / Uysallar produced by Ay Yapim. The director of the project is Onur Saylak. The screenwriter is Hakan Gunday. Recall that Onur and Hakan have already worked together on the TV series Personality. This is the story of the architect Oktay Uysal, who, secretly from his family, leads the life of a free artist. However, he has a wife, two children, a father and a cat, who also try to hide their secret world from other family members. Their world is full of lies, but perhaps this is the only way to be at peace with yourself? Maybe each of us needs a second life?
TV series As the Crow Flies / Kuş Uçuşu. The scriptwriter is Meriç Acemi. This is the story of Gen Z’s collision with Gen X, who controls the world. Generation X, using social media, new lines of business, new levers of influence, do not realize what kind of change we are all on the verge of. Everything has changed, goals, objectives, vision of the world. At the center of the story is Asli, who is trying to “fly like a bird,” striving to achieve her goal using the methods of the new digital world.
TV series Club / Kulüp starring Gökçe Bahadır, Barış Arduç and Salih Bademci. This is the story of a nightclub in Istanbul that takes place in 1955. Newly released from prison, Matilda starts working in a club that is a heaven for clients, but hell for workers. Gradually, the woman turns this place into a real home for those who work in it. She needs to get her daughter back, deal with her boss’s ego, her coworker’s jealousy, and find true friendship. Filming for the new series will begin in late January.
Cem Yilmaz’s new series Erşan Kuneri, in which he acts as a producer, director and starring actor. The sitcom is dedicated to erotic cinema of the 70s of the last century. After success in this entertainment industry, its producer decides to try his hand at other genres with his partners. Where will his cinematic destiny take him? Iranian cinema? Italian romance? Teenage slasher? Social drama? Or will he ride a horse in a historical action movie? Well, maybe he winks at a Hong Kong action movie? The series of 8 episodes will start next year.
The work on the TV series Hot Skull / Sıcak Kafa, which is being prepared by director Mert Baykal, continues. Turkish filmmakers have not yet created a full-fledged series in the post-apocalypse genre, it is not surprising that the preparation is very slow. Recall that the series is an adaptation of the novel of the same title by Afsin Kuma.
On December 4, Netflix will release the film Leyla Everlasting / 9 Kere Leyla starring Haluk Bilginer, Demet Akbağ and Elçin Sangu as Netflix Original. Recall that the film was intended to be shown in cinemas, but after cinemas in Turkey were quarantined, the creators chose to sell the movie to Netflix.
On January 8, the film Azizler starring Engin Günaydın, Haluk Bilginer, Binnur Kaya, Öner Erkan, and Fatih Artman will be released.
Also scheduled for 2021 are the premieres of the films Have you ever seen fireflies?, Summer 96, and Love Me Strongly directed by Mehmet Ada Oztekin, known for his previous work on the acclaimed film Miracle in the cell N 7.
The production of TV series and films, which Netflix has launched in Turkey, clearly indicates the seriousness of the intentions of the platform’s management. In addition to the projects officially announced at the last press conference, we know for sure about the preparation of new TV shows for Netflix by the largest producers, including TIMS & B, OG Medya, Ay Yapim and a number of independent producers. In the near future, we will hear about dozens of new products that Netflix will release in the next two years.
