Turkish actor and Emmy Award winner Haluk Bilginer has joined the cast of director Pablo Larraín’s new film “Maria”. In the film, Bilginer will play Greek shipping magnate and businessman Aristotle Onassis, who was the lover of opera singer Maria Callas.
Larraín, known for his biographical films “Jackie” and “Spencer”, is working on a film adaptation of Callas’ life. Angelina Jolie will play the lead role in the film. Filming is scheduled to begin in October in Budapest. The script was written by Steven Knight, creator of the series “Peaky Blinders”.
“Maria” tells the story of Callas’ last days of loneliness in Paris in the 1970s. Maria Callas, born in Greece and raised in New York City, was one of the most famous opera singers of her time. She had a long-term relationship with Onassis, who left her for Jacqueline Kennedy. After that, Callas moved to Italy and then to France. She never recovered from Onassis’ betrayal.
Haluk Bilginer recently completed filming for the TV series “The Turkish Detective”, based on the novel by Barbara Nadel, which will air on Paramount+. He will also appear in the miniseries “The Veil”, starring Elizabeth Moss. The Turkish episodes of the series were filmed in Istanbul and Niğde.
