The Ordinary Turkish Girl Hande Macit Becomes Duchess by Marrying Heir Prince of Mecklenburg
The fairytale story of Cinderella has turned into reality for the Turkish girl Hande Macit. While she hails from an affluent but untitled family, her spouse, Alexander of Mecklenburg, is the heir prince.
He is the second of three children born to Duke George Borwin of Mecklenburg and Alice Wagner. Alexander’s father, Duke Borwin of Mecklenburg, and his sons, Alexander and Michael, are the only known surviving legitimate male descendants of the medieval princely dynasty of Niklot, which ruled in the early 11th century. George Borwin of Mecklenburg is a notable politician and the head of the Mecklenburg-Strelitz and Mecklenburg-Schwerin houses.
The Tale of Hande Maсit
Hande Macit, hailing from Mersin, went to study in Rotterdam, where she met her future husband. Following their wedding ceremony, the couple resides in Rotterdam, and when required, Prince Alexander represents the House of Mecklenburg-Strelitz at various events. Despite the fact that the Weimar Republic abolished all duchies, kingdoms, and margraviates in Germany, these individuals carry titles of dukes and princes, which are recorded in their passports preceding their surnames.
The young couple met in 2019 in the Netherlands at the annual Tulip Ball, a charitable event.
How Their Story Began
Hande Macit recounted her encounter with her future husband in an interview: “In 2019, I attended a party where Alexander was also present. I didn’t know him at that point. He was living and working in Ireland, and he came to Rotterdam to visit his brother. During the party, Alexander approached me, greeted me, and started a conversation. After our talk, he took my phone number. A week later, he came to the Netherlands from Germany, and our meetings continued, growing in number. Two weeks after we first met, I learned that Alexander was an heir prince.”
On the other hand, Heir Prince George Alexander described their meeting: “I couldn’t let that moment slip away. At that moment, life seemed to stand still. I thought I needed to meet her again and talk. I didn’t believe in love at first sight until I saw Hande. Hande is the most beautiful girl in the world to me. Before meeting Hande, I didn’t know about Turks and Turkish culture. Thanks to Hande, I got acquainted with their culture. I traveled to Tars with Hande, and I liked it there. Every part of Turkey has its own story. I like Turkish food. My family also really loves Hande. Since I am part of a dynasty, we will move to Mecklenburg in the future.”
On December 20, 2020, His Highness Duke Borwin of Mecklenburg announced the engagement of his eldest son, Alexander (born 1991), to Turkish woman Hande Macit (born 1992) in Rotterdam.
Before the engagement, Hande converted to Catholicism, the faith of the Mecklenburg dukes since the 1920s. The rings were made in three traditional Mecklenburg-Strelitz colors: yellow, blue, and red.
Due to the pandemic-related quarantine, the engagement, as well as the civil ceremony, took place modestly. Similar to the religious wedding ceremony, Prince Alexander officially married Hande Macit in Mirow in June 2021. Even the parents were not present at the engagement and marriage registration; they congratulated the young couple remotely.
The religious marriage of Heir Prince Alexander took place on September 17, 2022, in Neustrelitz, where his ancestors ruled for centuries. It was in Neustrelitz, Germany, the former capital of the territory that the family ruled for several centuries, that the religious union of the heir took place.
It was a grandiose and magnificent wedding ceremony
The wedding ceremony followed the Roman Catholic rite, conducted by a priest from Neustrelitz and a priest from the Netherlands. According to NDR, the church seats 1800 people, with 200 seats reserved for the prince’s family. Good news arrived for the couple whose love story captivated and was spoken about by the whole world. Hande and Alexander are soon to become parents.
