For several days in a row, the Turkish press has been discussing the shocking fee that Çağatay Ulusoy received for working in the first Turkish-American series of Netflix Hakan Muhafiz / The Protector. Why are journalists so shocked by the actor’s salary?

The usual remuneration for the biggest stars of the Turkish screen is from 60 to 110 thousand Turkish lira per episode. Turkish producers cannot pay more since the production of the series becomes simply unprofitable. However, the advantage of working on an international Internet platform which has huge financial resources, is not only that the actor becomes famous far beyond the borders of his native country, but also in a significant increase in fees. Of course, it all depends on the success of the series on the platform.

According to Turkish media, the initial salary of Çağatay Ulusoy at Netflix was not so dizzying, the actor did not set the conditions for receiving a high fee.

Netflix agreed to pay the actor 500 thousand lira ($88,000) per one episode of The Protector in January, signing him for the third and fourth seasons of the series. Such a sharp increase in fees was due to the success of the project. This is normal practice for the American film business – actors of popular TV shows increase wages every season depending on popularity. Did you know that the actors of the series Game of Thrones earned $700,000 per episode.

Trustworthy sources claim that Netflix is currently in talks with the actor fearing that he might agree to work with the competitors. Indeed, on August 24, the shooting of the series The Protector was completed and now Çağatay can find a new job. The platform is ready to pay at American rates which means an even more serious increase in fees. However, given that for Çağatay the issue of salary is not a matter of principle, and he needs career growth, the outcome of these negotiations is impossible to predict.
