The Ertuğrul Gazi series has elicited criticism in Pakistan

TV show Ertuğrul Gazi / Diriliş: Ertuğrul was a huge hit in Pakistan, but criticism of the series came from well-known people. What happened, and will it prevent a demonstration of the Turkish project on the state channel?

The series Ertuğrul Gazi / Diriliş: Ertuğrul began to broadcast on the state television channel of Pakistan (PTV) on the personal order of the country’s Prime Minister Imran Khan, causing a wave of excitement among Pakistani viewers. In just two months on air, the YouTube channel of the Turkish series gained nearly 6 million viewers and 665 million views. The first episode of the project has already been viewed 57 million times.

However, there were dissatisfied voices who opposed the Turkish project. In particular, one of Pakistan’s most popular actors, Shaan Shahid, was vehemently opposed to the series being broadcast on the state channel, arguing that it existed on the money of Pakistani taxpayers, should show Pakistani serials, not TV shows from other countries.

However, this did not prevent Mr. Shahid from recognizing the Turkish project as a real masterpiece. He stated that there has been nothing like this on Pakistani television for 25 years. He was delighted with acting, directing, writing. When asked by his Twitter followers if he saw a contradiction in his words, Mr. Shaan stated that he had watched the series on Netflix and that his criticism was related to state channel policy rather than the Turkish project. However, the subscribers immediately accused him of not thinking about the people who do not have access to Netflix, and if they do, they do not know English (subtitles to the series are available on a digital platform in English only).

Overall, the controversy did not prevent Ertuğrul Gazi from broadcasting with success in Pakistan, where the number of fans of the series grew with each new episode. Most recently, Esra Bilgiç made a special photo shoot for the Pakistani version of Hello magazine, and Engin Altan Düzyatan in an interview with the state television channel PTV promised to come to the country after the end of the quarantine.
