Series ‘Şahmaran’: Success or Failure?
Great news for fans of Serenay Sarıkaya, Burak Deniz, and Mert Ramazan Demir! The series “Şahmaran,” which was released on Netflix two weeks ago, has been in high demand with the international audience.
On January 20, Netflix presented its subscribers with a new Turkish series, “Şahmaran,” starring Serenay Sarıkaya, Burak Deniz, and Mert Ramazan Demir. Despite mixed, often negative reviews from viewers and a low rating on IMDb (only 5.1), the series still found its audience on the platform.
According to official information, “Şahmaran” had 17,030,000 viewing hours, ranking 5th among all non-English-language TV shows on the platform in the world and was in the top in 14 countries in the first three days after its release. The following week, the project had 33,960,000 viewing hours, ranking 2nd among all non-English-language TV shows. The series was in the top in 53 countries around the world. Thus, “Şahmaran” had 50,990,000 viewing hours in two weeks (about 6.4 million viewers).
Turkish viewers wondered if this result could be considered successful. It should be noted that in the first 28 days after their release, the Netflix series “The Protector” and “Another Self” had approximately 90 million viewing hours. The series “Şahmaran” had 51 million viewing hours in the first two weeks, which is approximately in the same range. For comparison, the recognized hit of recent weeks, “Wednesday,” had 1 billion 237 million viewing hours.
The numbers speak for themselves – so far, the Turkish film industry has not had any real world hits on the platform. We can say that Turkish TV shows are popular and successful, but so far there has been no real hit. “Şahmaran,” like its predecessors, can be called a success of the Turkish Netflix. It remains only to wait for a real breakthrough that will take Turkish serial production to a new level.
