Will Сan Yaman be boycotted?

Can Yaman gives very ambivalent feelings in Turkey. Instead of being proud of the success of a compatriot abroad, the Turkish press harassed him. Why?

On November 24, Can Yaman arrived in Spain at the invitation of the Spanish television channel Divinity. The trip was widely covered in the press and the visit of the actor attracted the attention of his fans. We remind you that Spanish television channels broadcast several shows of Can at once, and also bought his previous series for future broadcasting. Having notified his fans on Instagram about the visit, Can received a huge crowd at the airport, from which he was saved by the local police.

However, there’s a wrinkle in the relationship between the star of the series The Daydreamer / Erkençi Kus and his viewers in Turkey. The Turkish press, as well as users on social networks, accuse the actor of rampant PR, setting as an example Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ, who was at the same time in Spain. However, he arrived quietly, he didn’t notify  anyone about his arrival and there weren’t the crowds of fans at the airport. Journalists immediately compared the behavior of the two actors, recognizing that Kıvanç was certainly more popular than Can, but he never used his PR strategy. At the same time, Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ is a real star and pride of Turkey.

Upon returning from Madrid, Turkish journalists met Can Yaman at the airport. The actor spoke in detail about the trip, noting that all of his series were sold to Spain and the Spanish social media users are very active. Of course, he would like his fellow citizens to behave more calmly and be proud of the success of their compatriots abroad.

However, the greatest excitement was caused by his words addressed to Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ. When journalists asked him how he felt about this debate, Can replied: “What can I do? I don’t know if brother Kıvanç’s TV shows have been sold to Spain. If sold, it’s good, if not sold, then there is nothing to be done. If the series of the actor are not sold, and they are not watched, then you can’t become popular. My series are very watched there. ” Of course, Can did not mean that he was more popular than Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ in Spain, discussing only sales of projects. However, the Turkish press immediately revised his statement, bringing down a stream of criticism on him for allegedly placing himself above a real Turkish superstar.

The next day, the Turkish tabloids came out under the headings “This won’t do, dear.” They claim that Can’s words seriously angered Kıvanç’s fans. Newspapers are happy to post photo comparisons, showing that when he returned to Turkey, Can was met only by journalists, there was no crowd of fans as in Madrid. Journalists also advise Mr. Yaman to look at more successful actors such as Kıvanç Tatlitug, Burak Özçivit, Çağatay Ulusoy and Barış Arduç, who, despite their fame, behave more modestly.

Moreover, the press has already compared the ratings of the series of Can Yaman in Spain with the ratings of the series of other Turkish actors. And it happened that right now Forbidden Love  starring Kıvanç Tatlıtuğ, has twice as many viewers as the Bitter Sweet / Dolunay series starring Can Yaman. The Daydreamer was almost twice as inferior in the number of viewers to such series as “The girl named Feriha” or “1001 Nights” starring Çağatay Ulusoy and Halit Ergenç. And the conclusion of Turkish journalists is ruthless: “Much ado about nothing.”

Alas, one careless phrase of the actor who did not mean anything bad led to far-reaching consequences. Many are already wondering: will Turkish audiences arrange a boycott of Mr. Yaman’s new project? Next year will be difficult for him.
