Netflix impacts Turkey’s economy
Netflix’s production contributes 583 million TL to Turkey’s economy and employs more than 3,300 people, while boosting interest in Turkish culture, music and books, according to a published study.
To date, more than 10 original Netflix projects produced in Turkey have been released. 1,600 jobs were created for actors and film crews. In total, taking into account both the series that are at the post-production stage and the administrative work, Netflix has provided jobs for 3,300 people. This is a lot, considering that about 10 thousand people work in Turkish show business.
The study also showed a significant increase in book sales on the basis of which the platform’s series are created, an increase in the number of tourists in the places where filming took place and a great interest in the music of Turkish artists in the Netflix series. This was highlighted in the books of Ipek Gökdel, whose sales have skyrocketed since the release of The Protector.
A 2020 poll found that those who watch The Protector are more likely to travel to Turkey than those who don’t. In the entire sample, those who watched the platform’s first draft were, on average, three times more likely to want to go to Turkey than those who did not watch the series.
Netflix has a significant impact on the music industry, with Turkish artists’ songs in their productions extremely popular on Spotify playlists. This is especially noticeable on the example of the series Love 101 / Aşk 101, which has provided international recognition to many Turkish performers.
